News Herald's Coverage of NCAC Letter

The News Herald has published an article about the NCAC's letter.

If Norman and her buddy Dobson are so worried about the effect of words on our children, they should choose their's more carefully. Norman insensitively used the word "lynch" when discussing the teacher whose class read the book. Now look what Dobson has said:

"To me, this teacher raped their minds with no parental consent," Dobson said.

"Rape," like "lynch" is a powerful word. How can anyone compare educating children to such a vile act? It makes it sound as if our children were violated by this teacher. When, in reality, the school board is violating the rights and trust of all the county's children.

WOW!!

Talk about painting a vivid picture...

Maybe we should ban The News Herald for printing such a "vulgar commentary". Of course we all know this could never happen in sleepy little Morganton, NC. It couldn't happen in Russia or Germany either, or so those people thought.

Interesting, isn't it, how quickly the fires of censorship can be fanned? Equally ironic, is the fact that the flames are usually driven by the "idiot wind" of ignorance.

December, January, and February. In the past three months, where has this board taken our students? How well have they promoted our school system? How well have they supported our teachers and administrators?

They have decided our sophomores are too immature to read about attrocity. They have decided our school system is broken and in need of a complete overhaul. They have told our teachers to go back to their classrooms and do their jobs while leaving the welfare of the school system in their "capable" hands. They have decided that they are more qualified to choose principals for schools than the superintendent.

They have set the course for BCPS to exclude freedom of speech or thought. All this - in only three short months.

As a parent involved in this school system, let me be the first to tell you that I have met some idiots. Unfortunately they came in the form of teachers and principles on many occassions. Not all of them! But enough to make me believe that decisions left in their hands without some authorative approval would be a bad idea. I sense that there is an underlying hostility among some of you that the people that you wanted elected lost. Get over it.

Actually, if you were as involved in the system as you say, you would also know there are plenty of parents who could wear the idiot label too. No system is perfect, simply because they usually involve human beings.

What you really sense here is a frustration with a perceived breakdown in that system, starting at the top. When those "in charge" circumvent that system, particularly at the higher levels, their actions are going to be very visible to the community.

I can say this with absolute conviction because I voted for a couple of these new board members, and so far I really don't like what I am seeing.

Teachers have children approximately eight hours a day. Parents have them sixteen hours. Teachers are responsible for 75 to 100 kids a day. Parents are responsible for 2, 3, 4, etc. Teachers are often asked to play mother, nurse, and couselor as well as educate. I'm sure there are some bad teachers out there, but there are bad parents too. If you don't think that the educated, dedicated teachers of Burke County are helping your child, then perhaps you should start volunteering in their classrooms. Better yet, go to college and get your teaching degree. Find out what it's like when apathetic students are sent to school by apathetic parents. See what it's like to teach kids whose parents let the television raise them rather than reading books. Lots of people blame teachers; I guess it's too difficult to analyze what you do for your kids at home.
